Havering, an ageing society, with inadequate care provision

Over-65s

Within the 20 minute drive time catchment area of the Cranham site, there are currently 96,155 (41,300 in Havering) people over the age of 65 rising to an projected 141,341 (55,700 in Havering) by 2029.

Over-80s

Within the 20 minute drive time catchment area of the Cranham site, there are currently 27,041 (10,100 in Havering) people over the age of 80, rising to a predicted 44,869 (27,041 in Havering) by 2029.

The care home supply in Havering is significantly below average, with a current shortfall of approximately 440 residential beds. Furthermore, as 35% of residential care homes and 48% of nursing care homes in the Borough score below the national average CSCI* ratings, the level of adequate care provision is cause for even greater concern.

There is also a current lack of Assisted Living provision in the Borough with just two Assisted Living schemes in the whole of Havering, providing 95 units in total. It is estimated there is a current need for approximately 700 Assisted Living Units in the catchment. This will increase by a further 100 units in the next 10 years.

Around 60% of Nursing Home and 83% of Residential Home bedrooms do not even have an en-suite WC. This implies that for an affluent catchment, very few residents will be able to find a service that meets their requirements or expectations.
